Motorway Speeding Fine: What to Expect

Motorway speeding carries the heaviest fines in UK motoring law — up to GBP 2,500 for the most serious offences. With the expansion of smart motorways and their variable speed limits, more drivers are being caught by cameras that enforce temporary limits. This guide explains the fines, the technology, and how to appeal.

Motorway speed limits

The national speed limit on UK motorways is 70mph. Smart motorways use variable mandatory speed limits (typically 40-60mph) displayed on overhead gantries. These limits are legally enforceable and cameras are positioned to detect vehicles exceeding them.

Fines and penalties

  • 71-86mph (70 limit): Band A — GBP 100 fixed penalty, 3 points, or speed awareness course
  • 87-100mph (70 limit): Band B — Court fine 75-125% weekly income, 4-6 points or 7-28 day ban
  • 101mph+ (70 limit): Band C — Court fine 125-175% weekly income, 6 points or 7-56 day ban

For variable speed limits on smart motorways, the bands apply relative to the displayed limit. Doing 70mph in a 50mph variable limit zone is a Band B offence.

Smart motorway camera types

Smart motorways use HADECS 3 (Highway Agency Digital Enforcement Camera System) cameras mounted on overhead gantries, and older Gatso-type cameras on some sections. SPECS average speed cameras are also used in roadworks zones. All must be type-approved and calibrated.

Appeal grounds for motorway fines

Common grounds include: the variable speed limit sign was not illuminated or was displaying the wrong limit, the camera was not calibrated, the NIP was not served within 14 days, the speed limit had just changed and braking would have been unsafe, or you were in an emergency situation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum fine for motorway speeding?

The maximum fine for speeding on a motorway is GBP 2,500 — higher than the GBP 1,000 maximum for other roads. Court fines are calculated as a percentage of weekly income and can be substantial for higher earners.

Do smart motorway cameras always work?

Smart motorway cameras are active when variable speed limits are displayed on the overhead gantries. Some also enforce the national speed limit (70mph) at all times. The camera must be properly calibrated and the speed limit signs must be clearly displayed.

Can I appeal a smart motorway speeding fine?

Yes. Grounds include: the variable speed limit sign was not displayed or was unclear, the camera was not calibrated, the NIP was late, or the speed limit had just changed and you could not safely slow down in time.
