Red Light Fine: How Much and How Many Points?
Running a red light in the UK is a criminal traffic offence, not a civil penalty. The standard fixed penalty is GBP 100 and 3 points on your licence. If you are close to the 12-point totting-up limit, or if the case goes to court, the consequences can be significantly worse. This guide covers all the details for 2026.
Red light fine?
Camera errors and amber-phase timing issues can give you grounds to challenge.
Check my appeal freeFixed penalty: GBP 100 + 3 points
The standard out-of-court penalty for a red light offence (TS10 endorsement) is GBP 100 and 3 penalty points. You have 28 days to accept and pay, or to request a court hearing.
Court fines
If the case goes to court — either because you requested a hearing or the circumstances were aggravated (e.g., an accident resulted) — the maximum fine is GBP 1,000. Courts can also impose a discretionary driving ban instead of or in addition to points.
Impact on your licence
Three points from a red light offence stay on your licence for 4 years. If this takes you to 12 or more points within 3 years, you face automatic disqualification for at least 6 months. New drivers (within 2 years of passing) face licence revocation at 6 points.
Appeal grounds
- Camera evidence is unclear or does not show you crossing after red
- The amber phase was shorter than the recommended minimum
- You crossed the line on amber, not red
- The NIP was not served within 14 days
- Camera was not type-approved or calibrated
