Speeding Fine Points: How Many and For How Long

Penalty points for speeding can affect your licence, your insurance premiums, and — if you are close to the 12-point limit — your ability to drive at all. This guide explains exactly how many points you can expect for different speeding offences and how long they remain on your record.

Points by offence severity

  • 3 points — Fixed penalty for lower-level speeding (Band A). The most common outcome.
  • 4-6 points — Court-imposed for moderate speeding (Band B). Alternatively, a 7-28 day driving ban.
  • 6 points — Court-imposed for serious speeding (Band C). Alternatively, a 7-56 day driving ban.

How long points stay on your licence

Speeding endorsements (coded SP30, SP40, or SP50) stay on your driving record for 4 years from the date of the offence. For the first 3 years, they are "active" and count towards the totting-up disqualification threshold. After 3 years, they are still visible but no longer count towards the 12-point total.

New drivers: the 6-point rule

If you passed your driving test within the last 2 years, your licence is revoked if you accumulate 6 or more points. You would then need to reapply for a provisional licence and pass both the theory and practical tests again. A single moderate speeding offence at court could cost you your licence.

Totting-up disqualification

Accumulating 12 or more points within any 3-year period triggers an automatic ban of at least 6 months. A second disqualification within 3 years results in a minimum 12-month ban. A third results in a minimum 2-year ban. Courts can consider "exceptional hardship" arguments but grant them rarely.

Avoiding points

The only ways to avoid points for a speeding offence are: successfully appealing the charge, attending a speed awareness course (if offered), or having the case withdrawn. Once points are endorsed, they cannot be removed early.

Frequently asked questions

How many points do you get for speeding?

Between 3 and 6 points depending on the severity. A fixed penalty notice carries 3 points. Court cases for higher speeds can result in 4 to 6 points or a driving ban.

How long do speeding points stay on your licence?

Speeding points remain on your licence for 4 years from the date of the offence. They are active for endorsement purposes for 3 years, meaning they count towards the 12-point totting-up threshold for 3 years.

What happens at 12 points?

If you accumulate 12 or more penalty points within 3 years, you face an automatic driving ban of at least 6 months under the totting-up provisions. New drivers (within 2 years of passing) lose their licence at just 6 points.
