ULEZ emission standards

  • Petrol cars and vans: Euro 4 or later (generally 2006 onwards)
  • Diesel cars and vans: Euro 6 or later (generally September 2015 onwards)
  • Motorcycles and mopeds: Euro 3 or later (generally 2007 onwards)
  • HGVs, buses, coaches: Euro VI

How to check

The simplest method is the TfL ULEZ vehicle checker online. Enter your registration number and get an instant result. Alternatively, check your V5C document — the Euro emission class is listed in section D.2. If your V5C does not show the emission class, the DVLA database may have it.

Common pitfalls

Some vehicles that appear to be compliant based on age are not, due to early production runs or non-standard engines. Conversely, some older vehicles have been retrofitted with cleaner engines or emission reduction systems. If your vehicle has been modified, you may need to apply to TfL for a compliance reassessment.

If your vehicle is not compliant

Options include: paying the GBP 12.50 daily charge, checking if you qualify for an exemption, applying for the scrappage scheme (if still available), retrofitting an approved emission reduction system, or using public transport within the zone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if my car is ULEZ compliant?

The quickest way is to use the TfL ULEZ vehicle checker at tfl.gov.uk/ulez. Enter your registration number and it will tell you whether your vehicle meets the emission standards. You can also check your V5C registration document for the Euro emission class.

What emission standard do I need?

Petrol vehicles need Euro 4 (generally manufactured from 2006). Diesel vehicles need Euro 6 (generally manufactured from September 2015). Motorcycles need Euro 3 (generally from 2007).

My car is Euro 5 diesel — do I have to pay?

Yes. Euro 5 diesel vehicles do not meet the ULEZ standard. Only Euro 6 and later diesel vehicles are compliant. This catches many vehicles manufactured between 2009 and 2015.
